The objective of this article is to analyze the defense of the conformity between faith and reason, as presented in the Essays on Theodicy and other texts by G. W. Leibniz. We aim to indicate how this defense is based on certain ontological and epistemological assumptions of the author, contrasting the rationalism of his philosophy with the rationalism of another thinker representing this school of thought: Descartes and his thesis of the free creation of eternal truths. Furthermore, we will highlight how the defense of articles of faith by reason is part of the project to strengthen Christianity and reunite the Christian branches — at the expense of other religions.
