The purpose of this article is to show that Ricoeur already refers to memory in Le volontaire et l’involontaire, related to the idea of birth and heredity. However, it indicates only one limit of Cogito in relation to the fact that we were born one day and we received the existence from our progenitors. Memory belongs more to those who remember our birth and to close relations than to us, since it is thought in the wake of the lived necessity, which we characterize as vital time. Then, we show that Ricoeur uses the sequence of generations as an instrument of thought to develop the idea of historical time, in which individual memory meets to some extent the historical past. Thus, the cogito almost “without past” must be understood as a subject that belongs to historical time.
