This article analyzes the media strategies of the candidates for governor of Minas Gerais in 2022 that polarize the dispute – Governor Romeu Zema (Novo) versus former Mayor of Belo Horizonte Alexandre Kalil (PSD). Based on an analysis of the Free Electoral Propaganda Schedule programs, we can see how political actors, who entered politics as outsiders in previous campaigns, left their anti-political discourse and seek a conciliatory narrative. Kalil was elected mayor in 2016, with an eccentric and anti-system discourse, running for the PHS (a small party), with only a few seconds of Electoral Time. In 2022, he abandoned the anti-political narrative and emphasized, in his TV programs, his strong alliance with then presidential candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), having run for a center-left front. Zema (Novo), who also became governor in 2018 with the proposal of breaking with the traditional political system, in 2022, forms a broad center-right and right-wing coalition and seeks, this time, to position himself as a successful manager, without denying his alliances with traditional political forces.
