SOCIOECONOMIC SURVEY AND ENVIRONMENTAL PERCEPTION OF RURAL COMMUNITIES AROUND THE SERRA DE SANTO ANTÔNIO STATE PARK, CAMPO MAIOR, PI

Abstract

This study presents the results of a socioeconomic survey and an assessment of environmental perception among rural communities surrounding the Serra de Santo Antonio State Park, located in the municipality of Campo Maior, Piauí, Brazil. The survey was conducted with 62 residents from 13 localities, using semi-structured interviews and qualified listening techniques. The data showed a population composed by person with mostly over 60 years of age, with low levels of formal education and income primarily derived from government welfare programs. The most of residences have water from wells or springs, rudimentary sewage trenches systems, and open burning of solid waste on their properties, factors that pose significant environmental risks. Although a considerable portion of the population is aware of the Park as a Conservation Unit, many do not understand its ecological and social functions. The study identified pressing issues in the park’s area of influence, including wildfires, illegal hunting, and excessive littering. The results highlight the need for environmental education initiatives, improvements in basic infrastructure, and stronger community participation in land management. This study contributed to the development of the Park’s Management Plan, promoting an integrated approach to environmental conservation and social development.
